OnthethirdMondayinJanuary,wecelebrateMartinLutherKing,Jr.'sbirthdayasafederalholiday.MartinLutherKing,Jr.workedtochangelawssothatallpeopleintheU.S.wouldbetreatedfairly.Heworkedforchangeinthe1950sand60swhenmanystateshadlawsseparatingblackandwhitepeople.MartinLutherKingtaughtpeopletousepeacefuldemonstrationstochangelaws,insteadofviolence.Manylawswerechangedbecauseofhiswork.ManypeopleworkedwithhiminthehopethattheU.S.couldbeafaircountryforallpeople.
InJanuaryorFebruarymanypeopleintheU.S.celebratetheChineseNewYear.TheChineseNewYearfallsbetweenJanuary10thandFebruary19th.Thedatechangesbecauseitisfromacalendarbasedonthemoon,notthesun.Onthisday,manyfamiliescleantheirhomesofallthe"old"andgetreadyfortheNewYear.Theywearnewclothesandsharedeliciousfood.Theygiveeachotherredenvelopeswithmoneyforgoodluckinthecomingyear.Theyalsolightfirecrackerstochaseawaybadluck.
